LOGLINE: Experiencing postpartum depression, a young mother continues to look to her husband for support, but as she hosts a “sip and see” party, it exposes the neglect and invisibility she faces, causing her composure to violently crack.
PROJECT SYNOPSIS: “The Fourth Trimester” is a psychological thriller focusing on a “Sip & See” party for everyone to come and see the new baby. The mom, Leslie, wakes up in the morning to change, feed, and clothe the baby. All the while, her husband, James, still rests in bed. She then tries to get herself ready, but the baby cries relentlessly. Her only choice is to bring the baby’s bassinet into the bathroom so that she can continue to dress herself. As the party starts in the couple’s backyard, and all of the husband’s extended family is in attendance, Leslie holds her baby, and everyone keeps surrounding her to give unsolicited advice. When she goes to put the baby down, Leslie sits by herself, isolated from everyone. Her husband then comes in with a cake and provides the final jab to push her over the edge. Leslie finally breaks down. And in spite of the scene that just took place, she goes to her baby and rocks her gently.
MISSION OF PROJECT: This is a story I want to tell because I want to highlight the importance of “it takes a village.” With 7.3 million households being run by single mothers in the US alone, I know this film will resonate with so many.
APPLICANT’S BIO: Dania Thalia Olivo is a Dominican writer, director, and mom who grew up in New York City. Currently, she is living in Los Angeles with her daughter while attending Loyola Marymount University to get her MFA in Film Production.
